Associate Professor Scanlan is a cybersecurity and privacy scholar whose primary research interests relate to the technical and social harms of the internet, with a particular focus on child exploitation prevention. He has worked on multiple projects related to child protection and online safety with organisations in Australia, the UK and Europe, including partnerships with large technology companies aimed at disrupting harmful behaviours occurring on their platforms. He is the academic co-lead of the CSAM Deterrence Centre, working with the technology industry and other stakeholders to prevent the access and sharing of CSAM at scale.
